Prioritizing Family: The Key to True Wealth and Success

Welcome back to the Roots to Riches podcast! I'm Justin Benton, your guide to unlocking ancient wisdom to boost your health and wealth. In today's episode, "Family First, Fortune Forever," I delve into the crucial topic of balancing business success with family priorities.

Key Takeaways:

1. Time Blocking with Boundaries

I emphasize the importance of prioritizing family time over work. By blocking out non-negotiable time for family activities such as dinners, weekends, and weekday mornings, my calendar now reflects my true values, not just my ambitions.

2. Involving Your Family in the Mission

I share how integrating family into your business mission can create a sense of ownership and unity. Whether it's having your kids help with small tasks or discussing business challenges and wins, involving them makes them part of the dream rather than competitors for your time.

3. Filtering Business Decisions

I now filter every business decision through one simple question: "Will this decision bless my family or burden them?" This approach ensures that my business choices align with my true priorities and values.

Personal Journey

I recount a transformative exercise I did with Dr. Wyatt Woodsmall, where I listed my top five priorities and the time I spent on each. This exercise revealed a misalignment between my stated priorities and my actual time investment, prompting me to make significant changes.

Practical Advice

I encourage listeners to perform the same exercise to evaluate their priorities and time allocation. By being honest with yourself, you can either adjust your time to match your priorities or re-evaluate what truly matters to you.

Final Thoughts

I conclude by inviting listeners to reflect on whether their business is blessing or draining their family. For those needing guidance, I offer a free guide called the "Seven Day Family Wealth Reset," which can be obtained by texting me directly.

Justin Benton:
So you can make more money, you can build another business, but you can't get back the years you lose with your kids or your wife or your family if you don't get your priorities right. So I learned to block time for my family first, not leftover scraps of time after work. I put a non-negotiable boundaries around, you know, dinners, weekends, and even weekday mornings. Um, my calendar reflects my true values, not just my ambitions. Welcome to Roots to Riches, where natural healing meets unstoppable success. Hi, I'm Justin Benton, your guide to unlocking ancient wisdom to boost your health and your wealth. Together, we'll explore these lost secrets that can transform our lives and the world around us. Let's get started. Welcome back to the Roots to Riches podcast, where we uncover the ancient wisdom that leads to real wealth, the kind that blesses your family, your health, and your future. I'm so excited for today's episode because this message has been stirring in my heart for a while now. It's called Family First, Fortune Forever. And it's about how you can build a thriving, profitable business without sacrificing the people who matter most. Because here's the truth. If success costs you your family, it's not success, is it now? A few years ago, I found myself in a moment where everything looked like it was going right on the outside. But on the inside, I could feel my priorities were slipping. And I remember specifically the moment that I figured this out was I was in a mastermind. and with my good buddy Joe Soto. And he brought in an NLP wizard, Dr. Wyatt Woodsmall, who's actually Tony Robbins' original mentor for NLP, Neuralistic Linguistic Programming. And he had us do an exercise, and he had us write down, and I encourage you to do the same exercise right now. So he had us write down our top five priorities. in our life, and you just write them down in any order, whatever pops into your head. So go ahead and write down or think of the top five priorities, and I'll give you a couple of seconds here. I'll even play a little Jeopardy music for you. Do, do, do, do, do, do, do.

null: Do, do, do, do, do, do. Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do. Do, do, do, do.

Justin Benton: Do, do, do, do, do, do. you wrote them down. Well, for me, I had written down, you know, family, I had written down faith, I had written down, you know, finances, I had written down relationships, I had written down, you know, things of that nature was my top five. And it was funny, and then he had write down in a separate column right next to it, what percentage of time do you spend on each one of those? And well, before he did that, first he said, prioritize those five. So go ahead, now you had five of them, now go ahead and do that. What's first, right? For me, it was family and faith and finances. and relationships and then, you know, relationships can be more like personal relationships, things like that. And so then, you know, and health, you know, those are kind of the top big five for me. And so then he said, prioritize them. So mine was like family and, you know, you know, job, work, passion, you know, mission, whatever you want. And so then I wrote them all down. And then the next step, so go ahead and do that if you haven't already, write down those top five priorities for you in order, prioritized. And then he had write down out of 100%, because we all have the same 100%, how much time were you spending on each of those categories? And so then I wrote down, you know, family, like, you know, 20% or 30% of the time. And then for me work at the time was like 50, 60%. And then the others, you know, made up the rest of it, you know, 10, 10, 10%, whatever it was. And I know a lot of us, I can only speak for a guy because I'm a guy, but there's a lot of us guys out there that we make a lot of sacrifices to bring home the bacon, as they say, to support our families, to provide for our families, to protect our families. And I know that's kind of where I think the line was a little blurry with me before I did this exercise was that I felt like I was doing right by my family by going after the big deals or the big partnerships or the big business, building it to a eight figure or even nine figure business. But when you wrote it down on paper like that, and I realized I was spending at least half of my time, if not more, you know, more than 50% of my time on my work and business and things of that nature. But then I had, and this is where Wyatt came in, Dr. Wyatt Woodsmall, and he's like, so if you look at your priorities and you see the amount of time that you're spending on each one of those top five priorities, there's two things you can do. One is you can, change the percentage of time that you put on those priorities to reflect the priority that you said, or you have to be honest with yourself and reprioritize what's really important to you. And so for me, that was really transitional. I mean, transformational, I should say. And so I was like, okay, so if family really is my number one priority, then I need to spend more time with my family. I need to prioritize you know, literally spending more time with my family. And, and what would that mean? I would mean traveling less. That would mean working less, working smarter. Uh, you know, there's that book, you know, the four hour work week, um, which has got a great title, which he tested to get Tim Ferriss. And, um, And so how would I be able to do that? And so that's what really got me. This was about four years ago that I first did this exercise, and I've shared it with lots of others, and I'm glad I was able to share it with you. So I hope that you can do the same thing and realize, you know, we all have the same 24 hours in the day. How are you prioritizing them? And so, you know, be honest with yourself. Either change your priorities, so work is your number one priority. Or if family really is or faith or health or relationships or whatever it is. How much time are you spending on it? You know the proofs in the pudding so to speak So that was a nice exercise that I hope that did some value for you there as well And so like I said, I mean I was you know, I was, I was chasing the big deals, chasing the next big thing. Um, but I was starting to miss moments with my kids and I was, I mean, I already prioritized it. I'm a big sports guy and I love to watch all my, you know, kids sports things, but sometimes big events would fall on, you know, a weekend that we had like a soccer game or a volleyball game or, Heaven forbid a baseball game. I'm a huge baseball guy And so I would miss like one or two or something and it drove me nuts But I didn't know I mean I was just like well, that's what I have to do. And so Until I did this exercise. That's when it really rang true with me and it you know being gone all the time and putting all your heart and energy into your work and You know, even if you believe it's for providing for your family, you know, you could start to lose closeness with your kids, with your wife. And those kinds of things were brought to my attention when I did this exercise. So, and God in his grace, he put, you know, put a mirror up in front of me so I could see exactly these results and I could make changes. You know, he showed me that if I was on this path that I wasn't you know, building a building a fortune I was I was building a future that my family might not even want to be a part of because you know who wants to have nice things or to be provided for if The cost is you never being around and that wasn't where I was but I certainly was you know kind of burning the midnight oil and and all that good stuff and so I knew I needed to make a change and I did and And that's when I realized family doesn't come after fortune, family is the fortune. So today, I wanted to share these three simple but powerful keys that have helped me realign everything. My time, my money, my business, to bless my family first. So key number one, time blocking with boundaries. This is huge. Now we all have calendars on our phones. We all have the same 24 hours in the day. It's a prioritization. It's time blocking. And I'll go into that a little bit more what that means. So, you can make more money, you can build another business, but you can't get back the years you lose with your kids or your wife or your family if you don't get your priorities right. So, I learned to block time for my family first, not leftover scraps of time after work. I put a non-negotiable boundaries around dinners, weekends, and even weekday mornings. my calendar reflects my true values, not just my ambitions. And so when you're doing a time blocking, yeah, you put everything into your calendar and you work, you put your, your, the, the family events, you know, if there's like my daughter Faith, she does plays and musicals and things like that. So I'm putting those in my calendar with a lot of help from my wife, Molly, because she's great. with organizations, so I have all that in my calendar. So when big events come up or things like that, sometimes I'll only go to a big event that's four or five days and I'll only go for one or two days and I'll fly back early or do whatever I have to do. So putting it in your calendar and then planning all of your other events around your family events. And look, sometimes there's going to be a big event that you can't miss and it's going to conflict with something, especially when you have four kids like I do. So there are going to be those times where you can't hit everything. And some events are less important than others. My four-year-old, Grace, is playing soccer. That's not the end of the world if I miss one of her games. Certainly don't want to miss the last one or the first one. But, you know, that might be something that, you know, it happens. But, you know, my daughter, Zoe, who's crushing it in volleyball, beach and indoor, is a freshman this year and starting in varsity and all that good stuff. You know, I never would ever want to miss one of those. So putting that in your calendar and planning around that is the goal. So key number two is involving your family in the mission. So I stopped seeing business and family as separate worlds. I started inviting my family into the mission. Sometimes that means having one of your kids help out with packing up products like we would do with our health and wellness products for 101hemp.org. or even brainstorming names and having ideas and asking their input, things like that, that you can include them and show them how the business works so they get an understanding of how business really works and how they can have their own business one day. Sometimes it's just letting them see the wins and even the challenges so they know they are a part of what we are building. And so I talk business a lot with my kids. I share with them what's going on. I talk with my wife a lot, who's a, you know, a co-founder with 101hemp.org. And I explain the values and I always, you know, when my daughter has, she got a lot of accolades this last weekend and, you know, MVP trophies and things like that. And I always complimented her for her hard work and her perseverance to overcome the adversity, not just the glory, not just the fame, not just the people patting on your back and all that kind of stuff, but what it took for you to get there. The effort, the focus, the determination, those are the things that I like to really appraise my daughter for because that's what gets you to those lofty goals. It's putting in the work when no one's looking. That's my beliefs. And so I want her to identify with that That it's not about the rewards or all the trophies or anything like that. It's about controlling what you can control, which is your effort and your attitude. All right, so key number, before we wrap, last thing with that is when your family feels ownership, they become part of the dream, not competing for it or not competition. So just food for thought on that. All right, so key number three, filter every business decision through one question. Here's the filter I use now. Will this decision bless my family or burden them? It's just that simple. Not, will this make the most money? Not, will this make me look successful? But rather, will this bless the people God has given me to love and lead? Powerful stuff. And would you be amazed how much faster you grow when your heart is aligned with your true why? And I've been praying hard for alignment. And my good friend, golfing buddy, Dr. Myron Golden likes to say, you're blessed when you're in alignment with your assignment. Thy kingdom come that will be done on earth as it is in heaven and those are the words of the art you know, they are father that Jesus taught us to speak and preach and pray and I just those are the words that resonate so deeply with me thy kingdom come so here on earth and you know, doing God's work, you know, to bless my family and to bless God and to bless Jesus and the opportunities that I've been blessed with. And, you know, thy kingdom come. So as I'm here on earth, what, you know, doing kingdom work. I will be done. And I repeat that and think about that all the time is to continue to put opportunities in front of me and people in front of me that they will be done that I can do your will that I can do that will that while I'm here on earth, glorifying you and, you know, giving the glory to you and doing the things that that are in alignment with what my time is here for. And, you know, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. So this is, I'm here on earth as it is in heaven. I'm doing God's work, heaven's work here on earth in alignment, listening to my heart, praying. And I'm so blessed that I have this opportunity to work with such amazing people and that I can have control over my schedule. You know, like I said, I'm not perfect. And there are times when I can't be in two places at one time, like my wife and daughter Zoe had to go to Reno and I stayed back because we had other kid duties and, you know, other kid things going on. We, you know, kind of divide and conquer, you know, and I do the best that I can, but I'm always praying and thinking of how I can do the best possible job I can do. And that's when I'm in alignment. and I've got such great partners. First, obviously, being with my wife and other partners in business, Russell Brunson, talking with him today. We got some really cool stuff I'm gonna have to talk about here soon with Secrets of Success. There's a really, really cool documentary that I'm in that I can't wait to talk more about, but we'll save that for another episode. I've been blessed to work with Eileen Wilder and her husband, Harrison Wilder, and helping them. That's the Convert High Ticket. you know, um, venture that I do. And I help them with their amazing, um, job that they help people with launching their high ticket offers to serve the people that are called to serve. And I help, you know, answer questions and help people get excited and get involved and enrolled in that. And I work with a great friend of mine, Richmond Din, and he has a high ticket offer for Point One Masterminds, which is amazing for coaches. It's the best coaching mastermind on the planet and helping people get surrounded with other like-minded, like-valued people so they can go fast and so they can succeed and reach the people they were called to reach. And there's a few more coming down the pipeline, too, that I'm feeling called to work with. One, of course, being who I just talked about, Myron Golden. I think he's obviously doing kingdom work. I even sent him a text in a Voxer. I was like, you know, are you sure you're not a prophet? I mean, the words that come out of his mouth are so amazing. He's so aligned with his assignment, as he likes to say. So he's another one that I look forward to. And obviously, there's another company that Russell, his coaching business is called PrimeMover, which I'm a part of. But there's an opening in the sales department that that I believe I'm destined to run and manage. So I look forward to if that's what is in the cards, if that's what's meant to be, if that's alignment with my assignment, then I look forward to that. happening and if that's, you know, that will be done. If that's God's will, then I'm 100% open to it and look forward to it. But again, like I said, I'm just so blessed for these opportunities, you know, to work with like-minded, like-valued people, to do Kingdom work. Yeah, it's legacy over revenue. And at the end of the day, what are we really building? Revenue will come and go, markets will rise and fall, but the roots you plant in your children, the values, the faith, the courage, those outlast everything. We are not just building businesses, we are building legacies, and it starts at home. So, if today's message stirred something in you, I want to invite you to take one small step. Ask yourself, right now, Is my business blessing my family or draining it? Tough question, I know. But be honest with yourself. And if you want some help realigning your business with your family's future, I put together a free guide you can grab. It's called the Seven Day Family Wealth Reset.
